Brent Westmoreland, the executive director of CRRUA, had initially pinpointed the issue to a pump in the arsenic treatment plant that failed to shut off as required. This malfunction led to an excess of sulfuric acid being introduced into the system, resulting in elevated pH levels. In response, CRRUA took decisive action by shutting down the source, and with the assistance of the Sunland Park Fire Department, they began flushing water lines and draining tanks. Continuous testing of the water approximately every hour has been instrumental in monitoring and facilitating the return of pH levels to normal standards.

As a positive development, an update issued on December 3, 2023, indicated that the following subdivisions are now showing standard pH levels and residents may resume using water in their homes after running all faucets for 20 minutes to clear the old water:

  • The Grove
  • Bluffs
  • Casas Lindas
  • Edgemont
  • Tuscan Ridge

However, an advisory to use bottled water remains in effect for certain areas, including Valencia Park and Villa Valencia, for activities such as drinking, cooking, and bathing. This precautionary measure continues to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in the still-affected areas.
